The Transformative Power of Relationships: Celebrating National Mentoring Month January 18, 2024 Meeting Street Academy – Charleston

By Emily Cruse, Executive Director, Be A Mentor

Be A Mentor has been a dedicated partner with Meeting Street Academy – Charleston for nearly eight school years. This collaboration is a natural fit as MSA holds a core belief in the transformative power of relationships.

Each year, over forty mentors generously contribute their time to guide and support the youth. The impact of this partnership extends beyond the mentees, resonating throughout the entire school community. Teachers share inspiring stories of witnessing the positive effects of adult interactions, observing a boost in confidence among their students.

Reflecting on the challenging times of the pandemic, one poignant story stands out. As we transitioned to virtual connections, a child expressed almost tearful excitement at the efforts his mentor invested to stay connected. Despite the virtual barrier, their relationship not only endured but flourished throughout the pandemic. Remarkably, they stayed connected even as the child transitioned to middle school after two years. This achievement was made possible by MSA’s unwavering emphasis on building relationships and fostering a supportive community around our youth.

We express our deep gratitude to MSA for their commitment and invite those interested in becoming mentors to join our community. Just one hour per week can make a significant positive impact. Together, we can bring about positive change.

Take a moment to reflect on a mentor you had in your life, whether a coach, teacher, uncle, or another influential figure. Consider the impact they had on you and let’s pay it forward during January, celebrating National Mentor Month!
