You can help us make a difference!
Through Read365, we will increase the literacy skills of fourth and fifth-grade students by providing more opportunities for students to read interactively and analyze literature with adult volunteers.
Mentor a Student
Through a partnership with “Be a Mentor” (a nonprofit organization that sets up mentor programs at Charleston County schools), our Charleston sites have created a mentoring program for our students. We are always looking for caring and dedicated individuals who are willing to serve as role models for our students. Mentors help their mentees set academic, personal and career goals; encourage their mentees to explore areas of interest; discuss the importance of persevering and graduating from college; and introduce their mentees to new people and different experiences. We ask our mentors to have lunch with their mentees weekly or bi-weekly, as consistency and dependability are of the utmost importance for our students.
Share your Talents
MSS strives to introduce our students to as many experiences as possible. If you have a special talent (e.g. music, dance, theater, art, model airplanes, etc.) that you would like to share, we would like to hear from you. This may be a one-time demonstration, or you may set up a regular time to work with students.
Read with a Child or Class
Literacy is a primary focus at MSS. From day one, we instill in our students a love of reading and books. If you also love to read, please consider reading to a class or practicing reading with a student.
There is a great deal of “behind the scenes” work that goes into running a classroom or a school. If you would like to help prepare materials for our classrooms or assist in other administrative ways, then this is the spot for you.
Assist with Extended Day
Almost all of our students participate in our extended day program and many volunteers are needed to help our extended day staff. Responsibilities include supporting the staff by playing games with the students, helping students with homework, and guiding them from one activity to the next.
MSS parents attend regular continuing education programs on topics ranging from developing healthy eating habits to dealing with behavioral issues at home; and from practicing prudent financial management to saving for college. If you have a particular area of expertise that could benefit our parents, please email us!
